How does Bay Management enhance your EV offering?

Electric vehicle chargers are becoming an increasingly common sight on car parks across the UK. However, many motorists are concerned about making the switch due to worries around range anxiety, meaning how far you can reliably travel on a single charge, and access to available, working chargers.

Investing in infrastructure

Many businesses have already started investing in their EV infrastructure, while others are considering their options. One key consideration to keep in mind is how do you ensure those dedicated spaces are available for people who need them?

At some point, we have all seen someone parking somewhere they shouldn’t be. When it comes to EV charging, this misuse of space can have serious repercussions on your business, so it’s important that you take the right steps to counteract any problems before they arise.

How does car park abuse impact EV charging?

As EV infrastructure develops, a lot of the initial investment is quite cautious, with most sites only implementing a small number of chargers. As a result, there is only a limited number of bays where drivers can top-up their battery.

With a limited amount of space available for charging, it is important that a site doesn’t experience any space abuse. If misuse does happen, motorists are not able to recharge their vehicles when they need to, making these spaces useless.

Blocking up those spaces creates several problems, including:

  • Congestion on-site as motorists wait for a particular space
  • A poor visitor experience due to the lack of spaces available
  • Complaints and added work for internal teams as they try to find motorists and have them move their vehicle
  • A damaged reputation for a business due to the frustration this causes
  • Loss of revenue from the charger going unused

These problems can all be detrimental to your business and when setting up your EV infrastructure as frustrated motorists will go elsewhere, as opposed to your car park becoming a destination for drivers who need to recharge.

How does Bay Management work?

Bay Management at its core is a really simple concept. A car drives into a bay and a camera in either a charger or a bollard records the number plate of the vehicle. If the vehicle is allowed to be in that space, due to being electric or on a specific list of registrations then they park as normal, if they aren’t authorised to be in a space then they are issued with a PCN.

Through Bay Management, problems around misusing EV bays can be solved in two specific ways.

Firstly, an EV charger with a dedicated ANPR camera housed within allows a single bay to be monitored and uses fuel analysis data to check if a vehicle parked in the space is electric or not. If it is not an electric vehicle, a PCN can be issued, deterring motorists from parking there if they don’t have a need to. This helps to ensure the bays remain clear for motorists with electric cars.

The other option we offer benefits sites that already have chargers in place. Our Bay Management monitoring bollard placed at the charger helps to add that same ANPR monitoring to an existing installation, meaning that if you have already invested in an EV infrastructure, you can still take the necessary steps to protect it.

How does this help your car park?

Management helps to remove the issues we covered earlier by improving space availability. This seemingly minor tweak to how your car park operates reduces complaints, improves visitor experience, lifts revenue, and saves your employees time.

By making it so you have better access to EV charging, you can begin to see a steady stream of motorists using your site to recharge. As this currently takes longer than traditional refuelling gives you more chance for that visitor to spend time with your other services, this means more time shopping, relaxing or getting something to eat on your site. Which can again supply an incremental lift to your revenue.

How can we help you make more of your EV infrastructure?

At Parkingeye, we understand the issues that face car parks across all sectors. Due to the direct impact on accessibility, infrastructure, and revenue, the abuse of priority spaces is a problem that needs to be managed. To help with this management, we created our bespoke Bay Management solution, which helps you take back control of problem areas on a car park and make life easier for staff and visitors alike.
