How do you reach sustainability goals on an NHS site?

The NHS has an ambitious environmental plan in place. The organisation represents 4% of the UK’s overall carbon emissions, so tackling their carbon output and lessening their environmental impact can have a huge effect on their services and the health of the wider public.

Hitting such a huge target is going to require wholesale changes across the entire National Health Service, as well as all of its suppliers and partners. With that in mind, how can the car parks on an NHS site help?

The NHS’ sustainability targets

The NHS is aiming to become the world’s first net zero health service. The organisation wants to hit an 80% reduction in carbon footprint between 2028 and 2032, before fully reaching net zero by 2040.

There are two clear elements to this, split into sections called the NHS Carbon Footprint and NHS Carbon Footprint Plus. One focuses on the areas the NHS has direct control over while the other (Carbon Footprint Plus) looks at the areas that they indirectly impact or fall outside of their scope.

How we align with your goals

For businesses to be able to support the NHS in its ambition they need to be aligned with its wider goals.

That starts with Account Management. For example, Parkingeye has a dedicated team purely for supporting the NHS and its various sites. Part of their remit is ensuring that whatever we do to be more environmentally sound is passed onto the NHS to support them too. Whether that’s a move towards solutions that reduce environmental impact, or changes to operations that help reduce carbon footprint.

If the NHS’ partners are all working towards the same goal it makes it easier to impact the sustainability goals that rely on third parties to achieve.

Sustainable solutions

Our solutions support the NHS in several ways.

By creating free-flowing car parks we help to reduce congestion and standing traffic on NHS sites. We’re also able to offer dynamic pricing, meaning drivers of vehicles with better emissions ratings or EVs can enjoy preferential rates, which can help aid the adoption of more sustainable vehicles and methods of transportation.

A similar effect can be achieved with our parking permits, where it is possible to apply better rates to more ecological vehicles or vehicles being used in NHS car sharing schemes.

All of our paid parking solutions and permits can be delivered in a completely paperless format too, cutting down on unnecessary waste and paper usage.

Our data and insight platform can also track changes across a parking estate. For example, fuel analysis reporting uses DVLA data to identify the types of vehicles utilising a car park. That data can be invaluable when deciding how to allocate spending and investment. For instance, if you identify a major increase in electric vehicles across your staff and patients it might be worth investing in a charging infrastructure to provide a valuable additional service.

The data helps guide the level of investment and more importantly where those chargers should be situated.

Helping you make more of your site

NHS Trusts are all working towards the same sustainability goal, but need to enact the changes to their sites in a way that makes sense on a location-by-location basis.

At Parkingeye we understand the intense pressure the NHS is under and work alongside some of its largest and most complex Trusts to create parking solutions that are tailored to each individual site to maximise the effectiveness of a car park and enhance each site’s staff and patient experience.
